The Advancing the Teaching of Mathematics and Science (A.T.O.M.S.) Center was created to meet the strategic needs of Georgia's K-12 schools in Science and Mathematics education. We do this by focusing our activities and initiatives across four major categories:

  • Teacher Development and Effectiveness
  • Teacher Induction and Retention
  • Teacher Recruitment
  • Faculty Excellence


The ATOMS Center will achieve this mission by realizing the follow strategic objectives:

  • Enhancing the effectiveness of practicing teachers
  • Implementing innovative strategies and programs that enhance the retention of new science and mathematics teachers
  • Influence K-12 student interest in science and mathematics education with emphasis in selecting STEM degree programs
  • Recruit a variety of candidates into the teaching profession
  • Publish research that contributes to the literature on in-service professional development, retention of teachers and attracting more students into the teaching professions in science and mathematics
